Dallas Cowboys

5 March 2009

According to ESPN the Dallas Cowboys have released Terrell Owens. Thank God!!!

There are a few things to look at over the next few weeks. One, where will Owens end up? Two, how will this affect the draft and Roy Williams? Three, who will become the replacement in the Cowboy's receiving courps?

As football fans across the globe cast their longing eyes in the direction of the April draft, I decided that now might be a good time to reflect on draft classes of the last 10 years. Too often in this business, we rush ahead to the next big event without taking pause to evaluate the past and learn from it. In a way, this study will still be a celebration of the coming 2009 draft as I believe it will shed some light on certain overlooked trends that no one ever stops to consider. I will begin with a class by class showdown of sorts at the quarterback position over the last 10 drafts.  This is part II in the series:

It’s no secret that the NFL draft draws worldwide interest. In fact, next to the Super Bowl, it is the most watched football-related event of the year. Now, it’s true that some of this mass appeal can be attributed to scheduling: its late April arrival each year serves as an oasis of sorts to the average football fan in the barren emptiness that separates the end of the Super Bowl and the start of training camp. Plus, it is the one true event that merges the collegiate and professional levels–thus, unifying two enormous pools of fans. So, this is all to say that I fully understand the inherent appeal of the system. The yearly NFL Combine, however, I believe to be an entirely different animal.

The crystal ball had a dreadful performance this past week, posting a woeful 1-3 record.  This is playoff time, so that is totally unacceptable!  The crystal ball started off 1-0, but then dropped its last three for the weekend!  Anyway, that puts the crystal ball at 3-5 for the post-season, and 36-31-1 overall.  That’s five games over .500 (.537 to be exact).  Hopefully the crystal ball will perform better this coming week, as the pressure mounts in the Championship games!  Let’s take a look back, and review what happened last week.

Wildcard weekend had an interesting lineup of games this year.  All four road teams (wildcard teams) were favored to win over the home teams (division winners).  That’s unusual, but this year it actually makes a lot of sense.  Many of the wildcard teams had better records than the division winners.  In the end, the underdogs won two of the four games (both 6th seeds defeated the 3rd seeded teams).

This past Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys traveled to Lincoln Financial Field to play the Philadelphia Eagles in what was a win and you’re in the playoffs game.  This game had a lot of build-up prior kick-off.  The Eagles found out, about 15 minutes before the game started, that the stars had aligned for them; the Bears and Buccaneers had both lost.  This game had everything football fans wanted.  It was the ‘Boys against the Birds, with their playoff destinies on the line.

On Saturday night, the Cowboys had a golden opportunity to close out Texas Stadium in style.  This was the final game to be played at the stadium.  A Cowboys win would have been a fitting end to a stadium that has had many classic games.  A win, and the Cowboys would have been one step further in their quest for a playoff berth, and a Super Bowl run.

2) Baltimore Ravens @ Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys kept their playoff hopes alive as they took down the Giants in a physical drag-out type of game last week. For this one, Tony Romo is listed as having a 'back contusion', but is expected to start the game. Thats good news, but I wouldn't expect otherwise. This game is just as big as last Sunday night against the Giants. The Ravens also have a lot to play for as they try for an AFC wild card bid. If the Ravens defense has their way, they'll have Romo on his heels. But who do I think will win this game? Good question. I pick Dallas. They just have too much talent. Baltimore has a lot to play for, but Dallas is Dallas. I pick Dallas! I think Romo and co will find a way....any way to win against Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Joe Flacco and company on Saturday night in the last game played at Texas Stadium.

Last year, the Cowboys sent 13 players to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.  Granted, a few of those players made it by name alone, but for the most part they deserved it.  When you go 13-3, as the Cowboys did last year, you tend to get a lot of coattail votes.  This year the ‘Boys will be sending only 5 players.

Last week, I wrote that this game would tell us everything we need to know about the 2008 Dallas Cowboys… What They Are.  The Cowboys have under-achieved this year, as they were the preseason favorites to win the Super Bowl.  Now, they are battling just to make the playoffs.  Maybe, everyone just overrated the Cowboys from the beginning?  Maybe, they’re just not good enough?  Maybe, they’re just…chokers?

Steelers 20 Cowboys 13

This had 'must win' all over it for the Dallas Cowboys. Did they deliver? Almost! The Cowboys took a 13-3 lead into the 4th and it looked like Dallas was going to take a hard fought game in the cold. Deshea Townsend had other ideas as he put the final stamp on the Steelers rally as he intercepted Tony Romo and ran it back for a pick six with 1:40 left in the game. A few things went wrong in the play that Townsend picked the ball off. Jason Witten ran the wrong route, but also Romo's throw wasn't terribly accurate. Romo put the blame on himself after the game. Looking ahead the Cowboys next (and last) 3 opponents for the regular season are: the Ravens, Giants, Eagles. It's going to be interesting to see how the pieces fall for 'America's Team'!

Based on the statistics sheet, this game should have been much closer than the actual final score indicated.  The Jaguars got more first downs than the Vikings (17-15), more passing yards (286-104), and held about even in time-of-possession.  However, the Vikes dominated the game in two key areas: turnovers recovered (five) and rushing yards (122-35).

Just this past Sunday (November 16th), something occurred in the NFL during a post-game news conference that has left me dumbfounded.  The Eagles and Bengals played to a 13-13 tie.  Usually that would be news in of itself, since ties are very rare in the NFL.  In fact, the last tie came in 2002.  The last time an Eagles game ended in a tie was, coincidentally, on November 16, 1997 against the Baltimore Ravens.  But what’s got my panties all up in a bunch is what Donovan McNabb had to say after the game.

Tony Romo makes his comeback on Sunday night as the Cowboy nation hopes Dallas can play like they did before Week 4 and all of last regular-season. This game is huge for the Cowboys. They need to win this game. I think they will. A loss would be crippling especially to a division opponent and especially to rivals Washington. The Cowboys haven't forgotten about the Redskins going into Dallas in Week 4 and literally sucking the time out of the clock in the 4th to deal Dallas their first loss of the season, no. I'm not a Cowboys fan, but coming off a bye, I can't see the Cowboys losing this one. I'll go with the Cowboys.

The crystal ball was a little off this past week, going 2-2.  That now puts me at 16-16 for the season, right at the .500 mark.  Not exactly great, but we will take it, especially since we didn’t get off to a great start.  We even had to have a changing of the guard a few weeks back, but this crystal ball knows that it could be next if it falters!  Let’s take a look back and see what happened this past weekend.

Last night, on Sunday Night Football, the Philadelphia Eagles wasted a golden opportunity.  The Birds lost to the New York Giants 36-31, at home.  Lincoln Financial Field (The Linc) was as loud as ever.  The Philly faithful were out in full force, only to be let down, once again, by the Eagles.  Many fans are fed up and frustrated with the team.

The Blast!

Hello Blast fans,

Well after a brief departure from my weekly post, it’s once again time to do some Blasting. This will be special edition of the blast since it will be directly pointed at everyone’s favorite team to hate. That’s right nothing but the blue and silver ladies who are settling down on earth and have seen the brutal reality.

Each week, on Friday, I will look into my (never wrong, just misinformed) crystal ball and give my predictions for that weekend games.  I will always prognosticate on the Eagles and Cowboys games and then pick two more games of interest (to me, that is, not necessarily to you).  Keep in mind, that this is for entertainment purposes only, and that I do not endorse any sort of legal or illegal gambling.  That being said…let’s see what’s in my crystal ball!

once the Cowboys start winning again.

The next three weeks will define this season for the Dallas Cowboys.  If the Cowboys can pull off a 3-game winning streak, they will find themselves at 8-4, with a good shot at accomplishing their goals.  If they can do this, then this will have been a good bye…not goodbye!

Crime and Punishment in Big D

You don’t have to be a die-hard fan to know that the biggest reason for the Cowboys’ recent struggles has been Brad Johnson. As bad as the offensive line and defensive secondary have played at times, the fact that the former Super Bowl quarterback hasn’t looked like he could throw a stone in the ocean this season has to be Wade Phillips’ worst oversight since coming to Dallas two years ago.

The debut of the Crypt Keeper was not a success. Two consecutive 2-2 records in the past two weeks (tongue twister yikes) keeps the overall record at .500 for the season. No worries though, I know success is on its way as the Crypt Keeper and I will go back to the drawing board to chalk up better predictions and analysis. With that said, let's see what happened in Week 9 of the NFL.

The new crystal ball is on a roll.  Last weeks debut at 3-1, was followed with perfection…4-0 this week!  That brings our prognosticating record to .500 for the season.  We had a slow start to the season, but now we are on a mission.  I am not one to gloat (yes I am!)…so let’s see what happened:

Yesterday, the Cowboys got their collective butts kicked at the Meadowlands by the G-Men.  There is plenty of blame to go around for sure.  But, did we not expect this?  Wasn’t it obvious (it was to me… read more here) that the ‘Boys had no shot at winning this game?  Everyone knew it…the coaches…even the players!

Heading into Sunday’s game against the Giants the Cowboys find themselves in a must-win game that they have no chance of winning.  The Cowboys are struggling, no doubt because of their many injuries…but that’s too easy of a cop-out.  Let’s take a look at why the ‘Boys are struggling even before the injuries started piling up:

2) Dallas Cowboys @ New York Giants

Dallas is coming off a ugly-drag-em-out type of game against the Bucs at home last Sunday in which they won 13-9. Cowboys will remain with back-up Brad Johnson as they go into Giants Stadium to face the defending Super Bowl Champions Giants on Sunday. As you look at this game..it's just so much in the favor of the Giants. Their home, their healthier then Dallas and they'll face a deflated team in the Cowboys injury-wise. With that said I pick the G-men in this one. Just too much to overcome if you're the

MID-SEASON NFL AWARDS & RECOGNITION

MOST OVER-PUBLICIZED
5. Jeremy Shockey (NO)—When he was acquired in the off-season from the Giants, many lauded the move. On paper, it truly seemed like a “win-win” scenario for both teams. One expert even went so far as to say that the outspoken tight end would have the same type of impact on the Saints as Randy Moss had on the Patriots in 2007 (sorry, Mr. Jaworski). Thus far, having played in 5 of 8 games, Shockey has 200 receiving yards, zero touchdowns, and two lost fumbles. Recently, he lashed out at his new organization for rushing him back on the playing field after he suffered a sports hernia earlier in the season. Even with crucial injuries at skill positions, the 4-4 Saints have had little trouble moving the ball on offense. If Shockey doesn’t score a touchdown shut up soon, he might find out the hard way just how expendable he actually is.

Last night, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 to win the World Series in five games (4-1).  This is the second World Championship for the Phils…they previously won in 1980…28 years ago.  This will be remembered as one of the weirdest finishes in a Series with an unprecedented suspension of a game due to inclement weather.  The game was concluded 48 hours later…in hindsight…it was worth the wait!

A week filled with late game nervousness and dominant performances. The Texans were the ones doing the prowling as they tore apart the Bengals. 'America's Team' didn't look so sharp, but they found a way to win. The NFL brought a real shootout to London (hopefully no one was hurt!) and Brett Favre didn't look good for the second consecutive week, but thankfully for the Jets, they played the Chiefs. I'll cover those games in this week's Fallout report!

The newly acquired crystal ball went 3-1 in its debut week, which leaves me 4 games under .500…we’re getting there!  That’s an impressive start for a young and naïve crystal ball.  It performed well in its new role…many people are relying on it…that’s a lot of pressure!  It clearly has better prognosticating skills than its predecessor.  Maybe the new mahogany base it sits on, gave it a sense of prestige.  Well, for whatever reason…I’ll take it!  Now let’s review what happened this past week:

Yesterday, the Cowboys defeated Tampa Bay 13-9.  The Cowboys were under a lot of pressure the past few weeks.  On and off the field issues fueled the fire.  Every news media outlet is looking through a microscope to see if and when the Cowboys will combust!  Sorry…ESPN…not this week!  We all know that you need the ratings and the material.  How else would you fill your pre and post-game shows?  Look elsewhere; there are 31 other teams with storylines.

UPSET SPECIAL
4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys

My crystal ball is back! The upset special portion was scrapped from last week's predictions due to the crystal ball's suspension, but after a lengthy talk and a few laughs the crystal ball has promised not to act up and has promised to get this week's upset special pick correct. Dallas has tumbled the past couple weeks with its injuries and an embarrassing loss to the Rams last week. Brad Johnson didn't look good against St.Louis as he made his first start in quite some time. He'll get the start again as Romo is not expected to return until mid-November. Dallas will face a good Tampa Bay team. Some could say Tampa could be favored in this game after everything Dallas has been through the last couple of weeks. Tampa does have the better record. Their coming off a drumming of the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football last week. I looked into my crystal ball and I saw the score and I saw the future. "Pleasant" is not a word that describes Cowboy fans' mood next week. My crystal ball is back. My crystal ball picks Tampa Bay!

sp;        When Bill Parcells resigned as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones did an extensive search to find his replacement.  It was believed, at the time, that Norv Turner was the front-runner.  The new head coach was going to inherit Jason Garrett, as Mr. Jones had already hired Garrett as the OC.  In the end, Jones decided on Wade Phillips.  The reasoning was that the Cowboys defense needed a proven “3-4 guy” to take what Parcells started to the next level.

ica's team" as Steven Jackson then ran the ball at ease for 3 touchdowns and the Rams clobbered the Dallas Cowboys 34-14. New acquisition Roy Williams had zilch receptions and star receiver Terrell Owens had a mere 2 for 31 yards. The road does not get easier for Dallas as they have to host the red-hot Buccaneers at home in Week 8. Huge game for Dallas. A win could relieve some of the pressure, but a loss could fire up the "Fire Wade Phillips" even more then they are at the moment. Would just be an ugly scene if that happens for Cowboys fans.

Yesterday the Cowboys went to St. Louis and decided to play their worst game of the year.  What had already been a tumultuous week for the Cowboys only got worse by the humiliation the Rams put on the ‘Boys.  Everyone (okay, maybe not everyone) is calling for Wade Phillips to be fired!  That’s not going to happen…not this week…not next week, not during the bye week!  There is too much at stake to do that!

NFC East

Week 7 preview

Hello East fans,

As we head into the critical part of the season, the East sets up for a huge weekend of football. Last week’s slip up by every team except Philly made the race a lot tighter. We do not know if Mr. Jessica Simpson will play this Sunday after speaking with Brett over the week. Eli seems to have a injury similar to SuperFive’s and the Skins are wondering if they really lost to the Rams or not.

Week's Record: 1-3

*Classic NFL Films music hits*

1) Dallas Cowboys @ St.Louis Rams

Dallas coming off a tough loss against the Cards try to redeem theirselves against a Rams team coming off a big upset win in Washington. Tony Romo is a question mark, but Romo or no Romo...I still can't see the Cowboys losing this one. I wouldn't be surprised if new addition Roy Williams gets in the mix early with a touchdown reception or a few big receptions. Rams aren't the greatest team either. The Redskins last week had several turnovers giving the Rams the score or good field postion. Turnovers kill good teams as well. I pick the Cowboys in this one.

A few minutes before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday afternoon, Jerry Jones pulled off a blockbuster deal for WR Roy Williams of the Detroit Lions.  Yes, I said “blockbuster”!  Keep in mind that trades are very rare in the NFL…especially at the trade deadline!  The Cowboys gave Detroit a 1st, a 3rd, and a 6th round draft choice.  In return the Cowboys received Roy Williams and Detroit’s 7th rounder.  Did Jerry overpay?  Did Jerry panic?  That would be NO and NO!

Is the Sky falling?

Hello NFL fans,

Well I am sure by now you Cowgirl fans are talking to the almighty for forgiveness and making unrealistic propositions for a little help. Don’t be alarmed Valley of the Departed I have all the confidence in Jerry Jones going two years with a 40 something quarterback as the backup. I mean didn’t Vinny play amazingly well when he was in there. Of course he did people, he was the best QB there was on the team. Do not pay any attention to the fact that this team was put together to be motivated when times were rough.
